In 2022, Dorset Highways started work to build a shared use footway/cycleway between Station Roundabout and Saxon Roundabout.

The scheme will be built in phases and provide much-needed pedestrian and cycle access between the Northport area of Wareham and the town centre.

It will also link to the completed section of cycleway alongside the A351 between Saxon Roundabout and Worgret Roundabout, enhancing the sustainable travel options in the market town.

Phase 1 – Station Roundabout to Wareham Roundabout

Funded by the Department for Transport ‘s Challenge Fund, this section of shared use path was built in early 2022 and is open for use.

Phase 2 – Wareham Roundabout to Saxon Roundabout

This phase will take the footway/cycleway over the existing A351 road bridge between Wareham Roundabout and Saxon Roundabout to help link communities with the town centre.

Investigative works

Between Monday 9 and Friday 13 October, and on Monday 16 October (if required), six bore holes will be drilled in the western verge to establish the composition of the embankment.

Work will be 24 hours a day to shorten the duration of work impacting on the busy A351 – with temporary traffic lights in operation during these investigative works.

There is currently no construction date for the cycleway.

Wareham Level Crossing

The cycleway scheme does not seek to replace the Wareham Level Crossing, although it will help improve accessibility to the station when the level crossing is not in use.

The manned pedestrian level crossing operates between 6am and 1am (the following day), seven days a week.

Dorset Council is continuing to work with Network Rail on a long-term solution to the accessibility issues at the station, following the planning refusal in 2012 for ramped access to the existing bridge.
