The Somerset Levels and Moors are of international importance as a wetland feature, and are designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the Habitat Regulations 2017 and listed as a Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Convention.

The site is located approximately 12km to the north of the Dorset Council area. The uppermost areas of the Somerset Levels and Moors hydrological catchment occupies parts of northern Dorset.
