Taxi and private hire licences

The Dorset Council area is split into 2 taxi zones:

  • Dorset Council (green plates)
  • Weymouth and Portland Zone (yellow plates)

You need a separate licence to work within each zone.

Private hire operator licence

If you want to accept private hire bookings for your private hire vehicle, you will need an operator's licence.

Taxi and private hire driver's licence

You can apply for a licence to drive a hackney carriage (taxi) or private hire vehicle, or a combined licence to drive both.

Your taxi or private hire vehicle must be licensed to work within one of our zones.
