Types of applications
You will need to submit a variation application. The type of application you submit depends on the changes you want to make.
A premises licence or club premises certificate can be varied in one of two ways:
- minor variation - changes that will not harm any of the licensing objectives
- full variation - changes that are likely to harm any of the licensing objectives
The licensing objectives are:
- the prevention of crime and disorder
- public safety
- prevention of a public nuisance
- protection of children from harm
What you can apply to change
Minor variations include:
- small changes to the structure or layout of the premises
- small adjustments to licensing hours
- removing out of date, irrelevant or unenforceable conditions
- adding conditions
- to add certain licensable activities
- to reduce the hours for the sale or supply of alcohol or to move the current times (without increasing them) between 7am and 11pm
You can't apply to increase the times for selling or supplying alcohol.
Full variations include:
- changes to increase the times alcohol can be sold or supplied
- to add the sale or supply of alcohol as a new licensable activity
- to sell alcohol between 11pm and 7am
- large structural changes to the premises that affect the licensable activities
- to extend the duration of a time limited premises licence
Apply for a minor variation
You'll need to provide:
- the £89 application fee
- the premises licence or club premises certificate
- a plan of the premises if there is a change in layout or structure
You will also need to advertise your variation. View the advertising requirements.
Complete the minor variation application form and return it to us along with the relevant documents and payment.
We will forward your application to the relevant responsible authorities.
After you've made an application
There is a period of 10 working days during which the responsible authorities and any other person can make representations about a premises licence application. We will consider representations when deciding whether or not the minor variation should be allowed. If the application is refused there is no right to a hearing but you can resubmit your application as a full variation.
Apply for a full variation
You'll need to provide:
- the application fee which will depend upon your premises non-domestic rateable value or business rates
- the premises licence or club premises certificate
- a consent form for the designated premises supervisor if alcohol is to be sold (not needed for club premises certificate)
You will also need to advertise your variation. View the advertising requirements.
Complete the premises licence variation application form and return it to us along with the relevant documents and payment.
Copies of your application also need to be sent to the relevant responsible authorities:
- East Dorset area responsible authorities
- North Dorset area responsible authorities
- Purbeck area responsible authorities
- West Dorset area responsible authorities
- Weymouth and Portland area responsible authorities
After you've made an application
There is a 28 day period during which the responsible authorities and any other person can make representations about a new premises licence application.
If representations are received, the application process can take longer as a licensing sub-committee might need to be arranged to to hear the application.
Change the name on a premises licence
By transferring the licence, the new owner will be able to carry out the same licensable activities as the previous owner.
You'll need to provide:
- the £23 application fee
- the licence holder consent to transfer form
Complete the premises licence transfer application and return it to us along with the relevant documents and payment.
A copy of your application also need to be sent to the police at:
Licensing Officer, Licensing Department, Poole Police Station, Wimborne Road, Poole, Dorset BH15 2BP
The police have 14 days to comment on the application and can object if they think the application undermines the crime and disorder licensing objective. If the police object the application may be decided by the licensing sub-committee.
Change the designated premises supervisor (DPS)
You'll need to provide:
- the £23 application fee
- a consent form for the designated premises supervisor
Complete the designated premises supervisor variation form and return it to us along with the relevant documents and payment.
A copy of your application also needs to be sent to the police:

The police have 14 days to comment on the application and can object if they think the application undermines the crime and disorder licensing objective. If the police object the application may be decided by the licensing sub-committee.
Payment
Payment can be made by card over the phone, or by sending a cheque. The 28 day representation period starts once payment is received.
